Revitalizing the Riverfront Rink

A renaissance of the Riverfront Rink builds multi-cultural, multi-generational communities in the largest outdoor rink in the region, which will make Cincinnati a destination for the skate community. Cincinnati Parks Foundation is fundraising to resurface the rink, making it safer for skaters and enhancing other elements to better support the current and future programming plans, including free skate rentals to make the sport accessible to many. This reconditioned outdoor rink continues to tell the story of a recreational art form that builds community and connection.

Why a Skating Rink?

Roller rinks have long been a place for entertainment and socialization, and a place for Black artists and musicians to perform and showcase their talents. A love of roller skating is often passed down from generation to generation, and a new rink gives communities a way to preserve this treasured tradition while building community.

Cincinnati is home to a thriving skating community of dance, group, quad and jam skaters.

More Than Just Skating

The rink provides year-round opportunities for open skate sessions, lessons, and special events and naturally extends into other activities like yoga and workout classes tailored specifically to skaters, but welcome to all. Existing curriculum linking skating to STEM makes the new rink a destination for school field trips, summer camps, and more.

The smooth surface will make the rink an ideal place for wheelchair sports, expanding opportunities for our be.well program with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. A focus on artist installations and projects at the rink will create a connection with the arts community.

Accessible for Everyone

The Sawyer Point Roller Rink is a highly accessible destination for everyone looking to enjoy outdoor skating. Conveniently located near the Oasis Line and the Riverfront walking path, visitors can easily reach the rink by bike or on foot. Major bus lines also serve the area, providing seamless public transportation options for those coming from various parts of the city, and nearby free and low-cost parking also gives easy access to the rink. For those residing or working in downtown Cincinnati, the rink is within walking distance, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely skate. Not just for roller skating, Sawyer Point Park is the place to play and offers opportunities for all wheels on the rink and pickleball and volleyball nearby. This combination of accessibility options highlights the rink’s commitment to being an inclusive and welcoming space for the entire community.

Growing a Community

Skate Downtown Cincy generated an audience with skating sessions over the past few years and has brought thousands to the rink. The work of the community-led Skate Downtown Cincy has engaged with local skating teams, growing a connected skating community and giving local youth leadership opportunities to promote and fundraise for this new facility. Shared assets, like restrooms and parking, with the adjacent Pickleball facility create more opportunities for connection and community.

Additionally, Sawyer Point Park is the place to play and offers opportunities for all wheels on the rink and pickleball and volleyball nearby.
